The Folded Flag Foundation Saves Time and Money with Elevate
In 2006, Haley Hartwick’s father, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Michael Hartwick, was killed in action while serving in Iraq. She was just 11 years old at the time. As a young adult, thanks to support from The Folded Flag Foundation, Haley was able to pursue her educational dreams and honor her father’s memory by attending college at Baylor University.
The Folded Flag Foundation’s mission is to provide educational scholarships and grants to the spouses and children of U.S. military and government personnel who died because of hostile action or an accident related to U.S. combat operations. To make success stories like Haley’s possible, The Folded Flag Foundation raises funds through individual giving from citizen philanthropists and corporate sponsorships, as well as special events including galas, golf tournaments, casino nights, and virtual concerts.
The foundation’s previous CRM was clunky and not user friendly, and the credit card processing fees were confusing and involved multiple vendors. The foundation switched to Salesforce.org’s Nonprofit Cloud with Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP) for CRM capabilities, combined all their payment processing with Stripe, and added Elevate to streamline its donation process.
Bundled Salesforce Solutions with Built-In Savings
“Salesforce was a perfect solution,” said Jennifer Ramieh, Chief Operating Officer at The Folded Flag Foundation. “Particularly, getting the licenses to Nonprofit Cloud for free as part of Salesforce’s Power of Us Program — that was a huge help for us as a nonprofit to keep expenses low.” The data transfer from The Folded Flag Foundation’s old CRM to Salesforce was done in-house, and Ramieh learned how to use NPSP without any prior experience. Ramieh praised the NPSP’s ease of use, saying, “It’s just a very easy, intuitive platform to work on.”
Ramieh loves that donations feed automatically into the organization’s system, making reporting and reconciliation easy. Moreover, donors are given the option to cover credit card processing fees, and recurring donors receive automatic notices if their credit card has been declined. NPSP and Elevate have also allowed Ramieh to improve her donor communication, from customizing gift receipts to regularly sending emails to the foundation’s database using Salesforce’s email templates.

One of her favorite features of Elevate is the easy-to-create Giving Pages. When a board member of The Folded Flag Foundation who is also the CEO of a local business wanted to set up a Giving Page just for his business, Ramieh’s team could easily make it happen without having to pay extra fees for additional donation pages. The system also makes campaign tracking a snap.
Impact: Significant Savings and Improved Efficiency
The Folded Flag Foundation is now saving money each month on credit card processing fees, and Ramieh appreciates the transparency in the pricing she receives with Stripe, which further eases reconciliation. The foundation is also saving money with Elevate as it no longer has to pay for unique Giving Pages. This translates to an annual savings of over $3,000. Perhaps more important, all the automation in Elevate is saving her time — over 40 hours annually — and letting her focus on other things. Ramieh is excited about continuing to explore and use NPSP and Elevate. One of her goals is to leverage Custom Fields in Elevate Giving Pages to enable donors to donate gifts in memory of a loved one.
