Security Improvements for Volunteers for Salesforce
Each year, hundreds of volunteers help Grand Canyon Trust survey springs, plant native grasses, and document grazing impacts at the Colorado Plateau.
Are you using Volunteers for Salesforce? Do your volunteers sign up for jobs or shifts online, or submit forms on your website? If so, now that the Winter ’20 release has gone live, you may want to make some small configuration changes. This process should take about 30 minutes, depending on how complex your sharing and security settings are.
Secure Guest User Record Access will be auto enabled on February 29, 2020 with the Spring ’20 release, so we recommend you do it now.
- Enable the Secure Guest User Record Access setting that is part of the Winter ’20 Release. From Setup, enter Sharing Settings in the Quick Find box, and select Sharing Settings. Select Secure guest user record access. New Salesforce customers automatically have this setting enabled. Salesforce Help document here.
- Once Secure Guest User Record Access is enabled, go to Setup, search for Custom Settings, click on the Volunteers Settings label, then click Manage. If Custom Settings have not been set, click New. If Custom Settings have been set, click Edit. Select Grant Guest User Update Access. Then, save your changes.
- Create Criteria Based Sharing Rules. For detailed instructions on setting up these Criteria Based Sharing Rules, go to Define Sharing Rules.
The reason behind all of this is increased security measures in the Winter ’20 release. Volunteers who sign up online are accessing your organization’s data without a log-in to Salesforce, and we want to make sure they continue to see only what they need to see.
