Salesforce.org Japan Brings the Hour of Code to the World Scout Jamboree

The 23rd World Scout Jamboree took place from July 28th to August 8th at Yamaguchi, with 15 volunteers from Salesforce delivering an Hour of Code session to young people between the ages of 14 and 17 years from around the world.  In total, 887 young people from 35 countries attended our coding workshop, with 288 girls taking part!

Both the participants and the volunteers had a great time: “It was an amazing time meeting young people from all over the world. As soon as the Hour of Code started, everyone was really focused and a lot of participants were asking questions like how to access more coding lessons following the session. I was so happy to be part of something that encourages young people to develop an interest in coding.” (Salesforce Volunteer)

And the Assistant District Commissioner of UK Scouts said: “(The Hour of Code was) a really great activity – popular with scouts from all over the world. It has been fantastic meeting all these fabulous young people and working with our new friends from Salesforce.org in Japan”.

The World Scout Jamboree is an official educational event of the World Organization of the Scout Movement that takes place in once in four years. About 30,000 youths from 162 countries gather and work together with international friends through camping.

2015年7月28日から8月8日に山口県で開催された第23回世界スカウトジャンボリー ※にて、 社員ボランティア15名が、Hour of Codeというプログラミング教育教材を使ったワークショップを世界から集まった14歳〜17歳の若者たちに提供しました。参加者数は合計で35カ国から887名にのぼり、うち女子の参加者は299名となりました。参加者もボランティアも非常に素晴らしい時間を過ごしました。以下コメントを紹介します。

社員からのコメント：「たくさんの国の子どもたちと出会い、貴重な時間だった。ワークショップが始まるとすぐに、みんなとても集中して取り組んでおり、「続きはどこでできるのか」など積極的な質問も多く受けた。若者たちがプログラミングへの関心を高められるよう後押しすることに少しでも貢献できて嬉しい。」

イギリスのボーイスカウトスタッフからのコメント：「Hour of Codeのワークショップは世界中のスカウトから人気で、とても良いアクティビティだった。 素晴らしい若者たちとの出会い、そして、セールスフォース・ドットコムの仲間たちと力を合わせてブースを運営することできたことは、非常に素晴らしかった。」

※世界スカウトジャンボリーは、4年に1度開かれる世界スカウト機構主催のスカウトの大会です。 世界162の国と地域から 約3万人の若者たちが集まり、キャンプをしながら「世界の仲間」と経験を共にします。日本での開催は1971年に開催されて以来2度目です。
