Hub Heroes: December 2018

The Power of Us Hub is an online community for Salesforce.org customers, certified partners and staff. The Hub is a place for you to get answers, build your Salesforce skills, share your expertise and connect with others in the nonprofit, higher education, and K-12 sectors who are using Salesforce!
Every month we feature members of the Power of Us Hub who help other members become more successful — they become “Hub Heroes”!
For the month of December, we are proud to highlight the community contributions of Bill Florio, Kristina Winters and Aiden Martin. Thanks to Bill, Kristina and Aiden for all you do!
We ask that our Hub Heroes share two truths and a lie about themselves — take a look below! Head to the Power of Us Hub, meet Bill, Kristina and Aiden and see if you can solve their “two truths and a lie!”

1. Two truths and a lie about you!
- I was made fun of by Wanda Sykes and Will Ferrell on national television.
- I wrote a gossip column for an international music magazine was assaulted by multiple band members for things I made up about them.
- I won a national book award at age 7.
2. Why is community important to you? What motivates you to contribute?
I’ve been involved in various community projects for a long time, from publications to cooperative record stores and music venues. While all of them have motivated me because of my passion for a mission or just enjoyment in personal interaction, I feel the Hub is making the most difference overall while populated by the largest hearts I’ve ever met. I feel I’ve made real friends and feel I will never give back as much as I’ve already received!
One fascinating aspect is that it’s hard to break an established culture. People generally assimilate or leave. I have felt alienated by certain nonprofit and higher ed communities in the past. I’ve always felt welcomed by the Salesforce community regardless of customer audience. I will go as far as to say Salesforce’s culture is affecting higher ed and nonprofit communities in a positive way that far exceeds the technical products being delivered. If we could imagine a world where education and nonprofit communities shared that Ohana culture the world could truly be a better place!

1. Two truths and one lie about you!
- I was voted “Most Likely to Appear on Jeopardy” in High School.
- I won an eating contest where I had to eat a 5-pound gummy snake.
- I once worked security for Keanu Reeves.
2. Why is community important to you? What motivates you to contribute?
A community only works when people give back more than they take. I try to follow a rule of 3:1. If I go into the Hub for a resource or to ask a question, then I try to go and answer 3 questions from other people. If all of the wonderful people we have in the Hub did the same, we’d probably have zero unanswered questions, right?
I used to live in Austin where they have something like 7 different user groups and I’ve participated in 5 over the years – Admin, Nonprofit, Developer, Salesforce Saturday, and Women in Tech. These groups were instrumental in helping me when I was an “accidental admin” at a small nonprofit all the way through my consulting career. Now that I live in Vermont and my in-person community options are rather limited, I’m finding my Ohana home again in the Power of Us Hub. It’s not quite the same (virtual hugs aren’t as good as real ones), but it’ll do in a pinch. Keeping this community healthy and active is important for all of us.
I am incredibly passionate about supporting small nonprofits who use Salesforce. Many times, small nonprofit admins are the only ones at their organization who “speak Salesforce”. They may not have funds for training or a consultant. They may be far from a user group or other in-person community. The Power of Us Hub is where these organizations go to get help.
So join me and challenge yourself to 3:1 participation in the Hub – you might be surprised just how much you can change the world in 3 little questions.

1. Two truths and a lie about you!
- I’m a regular blood donor and will make my 100th donation next year.
- When I was in high school, I participated in a televised trivia game show.
- Prior to working with Salesforce, I was a professional paintball champion.
2. Why is community important to you? What motivates you to contribute?
When I started working as a solo Salesforce admin, the online Community was the only way for me to communicate with other Salesforce administrators. Reading blogs and the nascent Answers board was a good way to learn but also to feel connected to a larger group.
Those early members of the community helped me get on my feet and it’s only right that I reciprocate by helping others. After all these years, the Community still makes me feel connected and it’s a great feeling to know that you’re helping others.
