In the meantime, check out a few takeaways from our conversation with Jake Hornsby below.
Community Engagement with AI
Like all new technology, having a community to innovate and collaborate with is key – especially in higher ed. Instead of working in a silo, Jake built a community of AI innovators from the ground up by hosting the first ever Einstein Bots hackathon at Cal State East Bay. Faculty members, students, administrators and other local institutions came together to talk about common use cases and collaboratively build automated student communication journeys with Einstein Bots. “Every team had their own bot with its own name. At the end of the day we had each of the teams present to the group and we gave out awards. It worked out really well and was a great way to bring the community together.” Jake says.
In terms of next steps, Jake and his team are consolidating the work from the hackathon event and plan to share the resources with the community to help other campuses on their AI journey.
Impact of AI on Students
Jake notes that the impact of AI on the student experience will come in many forms but the opportunities to improve that experience are endless. “If I was able to capture everything that I can about a student in one modern platform, like Salesforce, then it’s important to think about what I can do next”, Jake explains. “My goal is to turn students from just being seen as transactions to being viewed as individual people.”
And student data plays an essential role in that transformation, especially with AI. Jake speaks to the importance of getting as much student data in front of the Cal State East Bay staff as possible so that they can really know each student and create a tailored experience. Leveraging data from previous students can also help to identify ways to make current students more successful.
Migrating to a Campus-Wide CRM
Jake also gave some advice to fellow CIOs who might be looking to start modernizing their own systems. “Break free of the legacy stuff as soon as you possibly can,” Jake advises. “Reduce the technical debt that comes with those systems and focus on what really makes a difference.”
Jake speaks to finding a champion on campus that understands the value of connecting siloed data systems into a single view of the student. Becoming a Connected Campus truly starts with connected student data and reducing technical debt is the first step in improving the student experience at scale .“Democratize [your] data and toolset and see what happens. In the worst case, you’ll set up the next generation of staff, faculty and students for success by providing the framework.”
