Digital Transformation – the Rise of the Connected Nonprofit

By July 13, 2016

In the past, nonprofits used an array of siloed technologies to store, manage and analyze data across departments, resulting in complex, fragmented, and oftentimes unmanageable sets of solutions. With the adoption of cloud technologies and centralised systems we are now seeing nonprofits that work cross-functionally, that communicate better and are working towards a common goal. This new ‘Connected Nonprofit’ is fast becoming the industry norm, and the move to digital transformation is on most CIOs agendas. Trocaire is a great example of a nonprofit that has truly embraced digital, and achieved success across its programs and global network through the execution of this approach.

digital transformation

Trocaire began its journey with Salesforce in 2007, using Salesforce as a platform for fundraising and engagement, however it wasn’t until 2012 when it truly began its digital transformation. It was at that point when Michael Duggan joined the organisation as CIO, and introduced a Cloud First model which would see Salesforce becoming the strategic platform to connect almost all parts of Trocaire’s organisation.

What many people new to Salesforce may not realise, is that Salesforce’s real power lies in its platform, the architecture which underlies its capabilities for program management, fundraising, engagement, and analytics. The platform that brings together all these activities and enables users to integrate these processes and activities with every core process within their organisation. One central system – a single source of truth.

Gradually, Michael and his team began to migrate more and more departments and processes over to the Salesforce platform – Digital Engagement and Program Management, Partner Management, Fundraising and Project Management and even it’s call centre and internal HR department which they’ve developed using Service Cloud. Today Trocaire runs most of its organisation on Salesforce.
